I've had a bit of Down Time

I Know, I Know... It Happened Again, But I Promise There’s a Reason!

So, it's been about a week since my last update. My tech setup decided to throw an absolute fit, resulting in a cascade of hardware failures that forced me to spend the last seven days migrating systems, troubleshooting software, and rearranging my entire digital life. Just when I thought I finally had everything sorted, a crippling WordPress error blocked me from saving posts, closely followed by my NAS completely bricking itself after a forced firmware update.

Let's start at the beginning of this chaotic week.

Part 1: The Mac Mini Meltdown

On Monday of last week, my Mac mini decided it was time for its OpenMediaVault (OMV) installation to stop working entirely. Because that machine anchored my entire local setup, the crash instantly took down my home lab, my media server, and all of my smart home integrations.

The timing was particularly "impeccable" given that I had just finished migrating my smart home setup away from Home Assistant over to Homebridge and Scrypted.

I spent the better half of the week scrambling to move whatever services I could over to my Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) account. This involved backing up my existing cloud websites, tearing down my old environment, and provisioning a new, isolated instance dedicated strictly to my website, alongside utilizing my remaining available cloud instances to temporarily house the rescued home lab services.

Part 2: The WordPress API Stand-off

Once the cloud migration was finally stable, I sat down to write a quick post explaining why my previously scheduled content hadn't gone live. That's when I hit the next wall.

The backup restoration process had somehow deleted my unpublished drafts, and worse, the block editor flat-out refused to save any new content. It turned out to be a configuration misstep on my end with the site's environment tags and rewriting rules. It took two or three complete rebuild attempts and an entire day's work, but I finally got the REST API and database talking nicely again.

Part 3: The Final Blow from the NAS

With the cloud lab humming and WordPress fixed, I genuinely thought I could spend the weekend relaxing. Nope!

My Western Digital NAS chose that exact moment to download its final, end-of-support firmware update. Because WD is killing off the online features for this model, they pushed one last update—which, of course, did not go as planned and completely locked up the internal operating system.

Thankfully, I had already backed up my most critical data to external USB hard drives before the update ran. Now, I'm just waiting to get my hands on a 3.5″ hard drive docking station so I can hook the drive up to my laptop, wipe it clean, slap a fresh installation of Ubuntu or OMV on it, and slide it back into the enclosure as a fully open-source local server.

Looking Ahead

If there is any silver lining to this comedy of errors, it's that I managed to get the vast majority of these fires put out by Saturday evening. With any luck, I might actually get to sit back and enjoy what's left of my Sunday!

That is the grand explanation for the radio silence over the last week. Content might still be a little sporadic over the next few days, as my upcoming week has suddenly filled up due to some household DIY that went slightly sideways—but I will save that specific horror story for another post very soon!
