Isolation Day 9: YouTube Multicam Idea
Date Published
The "True" Multicam YouTube Editor
I’ve had this idea stuck in my head for a while now, and I’m still trying to figure out how to bridge the gap between concept and reality. I’m dreaming of a true Multicam editor for YouTube.
Currently, if you’re live streaming an event, the gear list is massive: you need a hardware switcher, a dedicated streaming PC, a media server, and a mountain of cabling.
The Vision
What if you could simplify that entire workflow? Imagine connecting each camera to a simple streaming device (like a Teradek Vidiu Pro) or even just using mobile phones (rigged up in a cage with a light and external battery), and streaming all those individual feeds directly to YouTube using a "Camera Angle" feature.
From there, you’d have a Multiview interface within the YouTube dashboard. You’d also have the ability to upload titles, graphics, or pre-recorded videos to YouTube, which you could trigger via a built-in media player (assuming YouTube supported alpha channels for transparency).
The Experience
- Workflow: You’d simply click on the feed or graphic you want to be live, and it would switch instantly.
- Hardware Integration: It would be a game-changer if you could pair this interface with an X-Keys programmable keyboard or a Stream Deck to allow for tactile, professional-style switching.
- Post-Production Bonus: Not only would you have your live stream, but all your individual high-quality camera angles would already be uploaded to YouTube, ready to be packaged for post-event release.
Who Needs This?
This would be perfect for smaller productions—churches, community groups, or schools—that can't afford the massive overhead of a full professional OB (Outside Broadcast) rig. I know this would have been a lifesaver years ago when I was producing content for the Beverley Folk Festival; we could have live-streamed every stage and all the interviews simultaneously.
I suspect this could be accomplished with the right combination of APIs, though for all I know, there might already be a tool out there doing this that I just haven't discovered yet.
What do you think? Is this the future of live streaming for small-to-mid-sized productions? Would you use it, or is the hardware-based control room still essential for your workflow? Let me know in the comments below!
