I’m thinking about learning to code in swift
I’ve Wanted to Write an App for Ages
For a long while now, I’ve wanted to learn how to write an app for iOS, macOS, and Apple TV. Nothing overly complicated—just something to start me on the path to learning the basics of app creation.
Another reason I’m wanting to start now is that with Apple moving to ARM to power their computers, I’ll only have to create one app instead of two separate ones.
The Learning Curve
The thing that worries me the most is not the coding itself, but how to connect the UI to the code, or how to pull feeds from sources like YouTube. I suppose that is what the learning experience is all about, though!
My plan after completing a free course is to create an app that displays multiple YouTube video feeds. This would allow me to watch a rocket launch with the Everyday Astronaut's feed and the SpaceX mission control audio simultaneously. This could eventually be expanded into the YouTube multiview/vision mixer I mentioned in one of my previous posts.
I’d also love to build a simple racing game that uses real-world map data to create race tracks. However, that would involve creating cars and tracks in Blender and building the worlds in Unity before somehow integrating them into Xcode. I don’t think this idea is going to happen for a long while yet.
Resources & Feedback
What apps would you like to see? Do you think I can pull off either of my app ideas? Where is the best online tutorial for Swift? Let me know in the comments below!
P.S. I wrote this using the Apple Scribble feature on my iPad Pro. It hasn't been the easiest experience, but I’m sure that with a bit of time—both for me and for Siri to learn—it will get easier. Now, if only I could get Grammarly on iPad!
